Mexico and United States Sign Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation for Security Issues

New Orleans, United States of America.

During the Leaders' Summit on the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP), Mexico and the United States signed an agreement today on cooperation in science and technology for security issues.

The aim of the agreement is to establish a framework to promote, develop and facilitate bilateral cooperation activities in science and technology and other national security issues that will boost the national security capacities of both countries in the prevention and detection of threats to national security as well as the response to the latter, the application of forensic methods and the attribution of terrorist threats, the protection of critical infrastructure and the response to crisis situations and the handling of their effects as well as the mitigation of events with significant consequences.

Through this agreement, cooperation schemes will be established for the development of security technologies. The agreement will enable both countries to share experiences in the application of technologies for the construction of biometric date, the processing of visa applications, the issuing of passports and records of entering and leaving the country.

The agreement will also permit the participation of Mexican researchers and scientists in technological development projects in the United States.

The agreement was signed by Interior Secretariat Juan Camilo Mouriño Terrazo, as Executive Secretary of the Mexican National Security Council and US Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff.

This agreement will enable the governments of Mexico and the United States to continue their efforts to improve security in both countries.
